Biosketch

Kathi Webster is currently the Director of the On-Call Program at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg Florida. Formerly the Clinical Educator, she was responsible for the orientation and ongoing education needs of nursing staff at an after-hours pediatric telephone triage nursing program. Previous to working at All Children's she was the Program Manager at St. Anthony's Hospital HealthLine, a service that provided telephone triage, community education, health assessments and physician/service referral to callers of all ages in the Tampa Bay area. Kathi also worked for a national vendor company of products related to telephone nursing and had the opportunity to visit and help with the startup training and education of telephone nurses all over the United States. She has been with All Children's since June 1996.

Kathi graduated from St. Anselm College in 1975 and somehow survived her early years in the nursing profession. After >22 years working as a Registered Nurse, and >10 exciting years in the specialty of telephone nursing (definition), Kathi has become an expert in telephone nursing. Her early experiences in the emergency department, a variety of management roles and hospital supervision served her well in the transition to the new specialty. She feels she still has a lot to learn as telephone nursing practice continues to grow and change.

In the late 70's, Kathi discovered the marvel of computer communications while playing a Star-Trek game on a college computer system and got into a chat with a system administrator many miles away. Her first home computer was the Commodore 64, later an Amiga, and finally the IBM clone. First exposed to computers in nursing in 1983 when she was appointed the computer liaison with Information Services for the nursing division at a community hospital in New Hampshire, she went on to focus her interests in electronic communications. She originally met her husband via a 300 baud modem over 10 years ago, long before such meetings were mainstream. Together they were Sysops (definition) of a six line system electronic bulletin board or BBS (definition) that won notoriety three years in a row by being voted as one of the best 100 BBSes in the US. Then Kathi discovered the Internet.

Kathi is the webmaster (definition) for the Internet domain at www.katsden.com and administers and maintains five separate web sites there including The Fine Art of Nursing, Telephone Nursing Practice, Telephone Nursing Telezine, Webster's Death, Dying and Grief Guide, and a personal website.

When she is not maintaining her websites and working at All Children's Hospital, she likes to learn everything she can about Hypertext Markup Language or HTML (definition), the Internet, and computers. In addition, she spends a considerable amount of time writing articles and formatting her own electronic magazine or ezine (definition). Her homegrown hyperlinked (definition) ezine was the first of its kind on the Internet focusing on nursing practice. Graphics (definition) creation and manipulation has been one of her hobbies over the years, and she now uses a digital camera (definition) and a scanner to document events in her life for her family, along with developing materials for her websites.

Professional Interests and Responsibilities

Kathi is interested in just about everything having to do with telephone nursing practice. She is particularly intrigued with the challenges and idiosyncrasies of pediatric practice, development of competency, assessment tools and standards, nursing staff orientation and education, along with the use of cyberspace (definition) and telephony (definition) for professional networking of telehealth nurses.

Because she feels her responsibilities to her profession strongly, she decided that working to develop a clearinghouse for information about telephone nursing on the Internet took precedence over most other activities in her life. The task has been demanding but results have been rewarding.

Curriculum Vita

Kathi's formal CV includes the usual employment information, workshops and seminars, and associations. It is available upon request for those people with a reason to have it.

Conference Presentations

Kathi has presented most recently at:

  • The Orlando Forum sponsored by Health Potentials Inc.. on the birth of a pediatric call center - Orlando FL
  • Contemporary Forums Telephone Triage: Essentials for Expert Practice conference on issues related to child abuse - Washington DC
  • The annual meeting of the American College Health Association on avoiding risks and pitfalls in telephone nursing - New Orleans LA

Kathi likes to inject as much humor and energy into her presentations as possible and is usually able to keep even the most weary and distracted conference attendee amused while they learn.

Due to her demanding schedule, Kathi is highly selective as to where and when she is able to speak, preferring to spend her time working on her own projects. She is available on a limited basis for speaking engagements and telephone nursing consultation.
